About us

Kinoatelje functions as a multifunctional hub for intercultural and cross-border projects in the field of film and audiovisual media. Its activities encompass the organization and promotion of cultural events, documentation and research, publishing, distribution, as well as film and audiovisual production. While Kinoatelje integrates various areas, it maintains common traits and addresses both sides of the Slovenian-Italian border.

Kinoatelje was founded in 1977 by Senator Darko Bratina, a film critic and professor of sociology at the Faculty of Political Science, University of Trieste. In 1981, Kinoatelje co-organized the first retrospective of Slovenian film Slovenski Film 1948–1981 Cinema sloveno, which was held in Gorizia, across the border. Subsequently, Kinoatelje focused primarily on presenting Slovenian video, film, and television production to Italian audiences (e.g., the festival Film Video Monitor, Gorizia 1986–2000; the presentation of Slovenian cinema in Rome, 1987) and organized regular film theater seasons (GoricaKinema/GoriziaCinema, 1984–2009).

Kinoatelje operates in Gorizia, a city that bridges the Romance and Slavic worlds and was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire until World War I, then home to an indigenous German-speaking community. In 2000, Kinoatelje established Zavod Kinoatelje in Slovenia, focusing on video and film production, as well as documenting and researching memories in the border region.

Kinoatelje is a member of FIC – Federazione Italiana Cineforum. It collaborates with major film institutions in Friuli Venezia Giulia and Slovenia, working with schools in both regions to promote film culture among young people. In partnership with the University of Udine - DAMS, the “Sergio Amidei” association, the Province of Gorizia, and Transmedia, Kinoatelje co-founded the Palazzo del Cinema – Hiša filma in 2007, managing the Provincial Media Library “Ugo Casiraghi” in Gorizia.
