Boundaries of celluloid (Confini di celluloide, Meje na celuloidu), edited by Kinoatelje, is a publication based on a new concept. It is not a sociology text, though the author is a sociologist, but, starting from the method of analysis and interpretation of social sciences, it uses films and audiovisual contents to explain the object of its survey, which is concerned with boundaries and diversity. This book includes plot descriptions and scraps of dialogues from the films and docu-mentaries that are analyzed and it points out how visual techniques should increasingly be considered as a basic tool of social research. This is not only a book about the boundary, about its meaning, its expression, the forms it takes, how it is used and its consequences; it is also a book about the boundary between cinema and society, between fiction and reality, between film narration and sociological language in order to understand the complexity of life in border areas, places full of passions and tensions which may be ancient, or part of the present or the future, but as well places where anything is possible, at times tragically and sometimes almost a farce, but where the atmosphere is always ambiguous, fascinating and intensely emotional.
