All I Have, I Carry With Me. The Refugee's Suitcase
2016/2017
Through understanding the past to comprehend the present – this is how the activities carried out within the educational project All I Have, I Carry With Me. The Refugee's Suitcase, supported by the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region and the Office for Slovenians Abroad, can be summarized. The project involved students from primary, middle, and high schools in Gorica, Trieste, Doberdob, and Špeter.
Refugees are a topic that is reported almost daily in the media. But this is not something new; on the contrary. If we limit ourselves to our own territory, we can undoubtedly mention the mass migration of people that occurred after the establishment of the Isonzo Front in 1915, when 190,000 people left this area – some to the interior of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, others to Italy. Therefore, we start from the assumption that understanding our past can help us understand current issues related to migration.
The suitcase is a symbol of departure, a small treasure chest into which people pack their most essential belongings before leaving. It represents hope for a better future. And just as the wise man Bias departed, equipped “only” with knowledge and wisdom, so too did the participants in the project fill the refugee’s suitcase with various activities and meetings.
